The goal of the Special Education Committee (SEC) is to establish a network of support for parents and guardians of students with special needs so that they can help their children maximize their potential.
- To support the district to assist the schools in most effectively helping children with special needs
- To provide information to all parents and community members about children with special needs, so that they can understand and support all children
- To help all children understand and appreciate the challenges faced by children with special needs
- To make recommendations to the Advocacy committee to secure and retain adequate laws (and funding for them) for children with special needs
Activities may include:
- Special Needs activities and trainings
- Parent to parent mentorship
- Coordinates with other SPC committees
- Parent and community education
- Volunteer at events
Committee Chairperson volunteer description:
- The Chair of the SPC Special Education Committee (SEC) is the main contact person for SEC events and activities. Specifically, the Chair will:
- Lead monthly SEC meetings
- Advise and report to the Executive Board
- Write article or record vlog for SPC monthly newsletter
- Work with the Outreach Committee to oversee Ability Awareness activities and outreach
- Help inform the public about events and activities supportive of special needs students
- Maintain SEC web page, social media discussion groups (if created)
